The First 100 days...

I am not speaking of the new presidential administration, but rather of our time at Lawndale Baptist Church in Philadelphia! Today completes 100 days since Mary Ann and I moved to Cinnaminson, NJ and began our ministry in Philadelphia. The time has passed quickly, and I must admit that starting in a new ministry in the midst of a pandemic has not been without challenges. Even so, we feel like we are connecting with our new church family and have been blessed to observe the passion, commitment, and giftedness of so many at LBC. I am particularly impressed with the energy Pastor Ben brings to the youth ministries of the church, and the team of workers that support him in that work. Also the deacons and trustees are examples to the broader church family of commitment and faithfulness, for which I am grateful. Hopefully, with the roll out of vaccines beginning, we'll be able to gradually lesson the restrictions on our gatherings and settle into a "new normal" as we seek to hold forth the Word of Life to Lawndale, Philadelphia, and beyond. Jesus is building His church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it!

Your co-worker in Christ,

Pastor Steve

Jesus, the Great I AM! - John 8:48-59

Who is Jesus? The Great I AM! John 8:48-59 Introduction: Here, at the end of John 8, is a passage that powerfully responds to a key question John has invited us to consider: Who is Jesus? We have not rushed our study of this scene, at, or just after the Feast of Booths in Jerusalem. Still there is much more that could and should be said. Jesus is in a confrontation with some of the leaders of the Jews; and He had just said that their rejection of Him revealed that they did not know God (8:42-47) – Rather than being children of God, their unbelief exposed them as children of the Devil. The One whom they should have been waiting for, the One predicted in the Scriptures (which they claimed to believe), the One promised since the Fall was there, in their midst, and they did not know Him.   He came unto His own, and his own people did not receive Him.        In this scene Jesus is about to reveal more explicitly who He claims to be, and they ar...

The Lord of the Storm - John 6:16-21

The Lord of the Storm John 6:15-21 Introduction : Storms come in life. One writer described how he had a cartoon cut out and pinned to a bulletin board in his office… He said it pictured two cowboys, taking cover behind a rock, with a hoard of hundreds of [“indigenous Americans”!] on horseback charging toward them. One cowboy looks at the other and says, “This isn’t going to be as easy as it looks.” Life in a fallen world can be hard, right? Jesus said, “ In the world you will have tribulation …” But then He says, “… be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Several Psalms depict the tribulations of life poetically, using the imagery of the chaotic waters, and also the comfort available to those whose trust is in God. For example, Psalm 46 begins… Psalm 46:1-7,    “God is our refuge and strength, a very present   help in trouble.   2 Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of t...

Like Father, Like Son - John 8:37-47

Like Father, Like Son John 8:37-47 Introduction: A few months ago, I met with two of my cousins, one is pastor, the other is a retired policeman who was visiting from California. As we conversed, I found out one of my cousin’s children had done a genealogical search on the “Nash” family tree. I had heard some stories… most still unconfirmed. However, I was surprised to learn that we are distant relatives of a couple of noteworthy people… the 20 th century poet Ogden Nash, and also someone who served as a General in the Continental Army, who was appointed by George Washington, and died in the Battle of Germantown on October 7, 1777, General Francis Nash, after who Nashville is named. I still can’t sing, oh well!          Parents certainly have a tremendous impact on their children. I remember a father holding his young son on his lap at prayer meeting maybe 2 or 3 (?), and as we prayed around and came to him, as the father finished praying...
